Approved Infection Control & Jurisprudence Courses
Continuing Education Hours Required: Infection Control & Jurisprudence
Beginning September 1, 2018, all licensed dentists, dental hygienists, and registered dental assistants will be required to complete a minimum of 1 hour of continuing education in the area of Iowa jurisprudence, and a minimum of 1 hour in the area of infection control standards, as established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). To renew on active status, dental hygienists and dental assistants will need to report these hours beginning with the 2019 renewal. Dentists will be required to report these hours beginning with the 2020 renewal.
These continuing education courses may be completed in person, online, or via other self-study options. Please keep in mind, there is a limit of 12 hours every renewal period, for all self-study courses. Participation in live webinars, wherein participants can interact in real time via instant messaging or over phone with the instructor, is not considered self study. Watching a webinar, which was previously recorded and available on demand, would be considered self study.
The CDC last updated the guidelines for infection control in dental offices in the December 19, 2003 issue of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), Vol. 52, No. RR-17.
Please note: Not all OSHA courses will meet this requirement. Although there may be some overlap between OSHA training and infection control standards, not all OSHA courses address matters related to infection control. If your OSHA training includes a minimum of 1 hour focused on CDC guidelines for infection control in dental offices, that training will meet this requirement. Should you use an OSHA course to meet this requirement, you may be asked to submit evidence of the focus on infection control if you should be selected for continuing education audit.
The following providers offer continuing education courses in the area of infection control. Please note: You are not restricted to this list of infection control continuing education providers.

Additional courses have been submitted and are pending Board approval. They will be posted following approval by the Board. A schedule of upcoming meetings of the Continuing Education Advisory Committee and the Iowa Dental Board is available here.
The following jurisprudence courses have been approved by the Board for the purposes of renewal:

In order to meet the jurisprudence requirement for the 2020 renewal, dentists will need to complete an approved course September 1, 2018 or later.
Jurisprudence Course Submission Requests
The Board has put together a template that may be used for individuals or organizations that wish to provide continuing education in the area of jurisprudence. : The intent should not be to cover all of the chapters listed on the outline in a single one-hour course. Rather, the form is intended to be a guide to meet the needs of your intended audience(s).
If you wish to submit a request for approval to offer jurisprudence as a continuing education course, please download the following form: Application for Approval of a Jurisprudence Continuing Education Course. Upon receipt, the course will be reviewed at the next meeting** of the Continuing Education Advisory Committee. The committee's recommendation will be reviewed by the Board for a final decision at the following Board meeting. A full list of scheduled committee and Board meetings is available here.
**To ensure inclusion at a committee or Board meeting, requests and related materials must be received no later than two weeks in advance of the scheduled meeting. Requests received after that date may be held for a subsequent meeting.
